We are seeking an Ophthalmology Registrar to join our team of Eye Consultants, specialist nurses and Technicians in January 2024.
There are Five Consultant Ophthalmologists and 3 visiting Specialists from Auckland, providing a wide range of elective and acute services to Northland. We offer a general ophthalmology experience which is only available in a district hospital setting. We have a very high incidence of skin cancers including basal cell carcinoma and you will get broad experience of lid surgery. Diabetes is extremely common in Northland, and you will gain experience of laser and intravitreal injections in the management of this, and of ARMD. We have ultrasound, OCT and Corneal Topography including corneal cross-linking available, and also Pascal and YAG and SLT lasers.
Being one of the only Ophthalmology Registrars you will gain much experience, there is the opportunity for extensive on the job teaching from the consultant staff with whom you will work in a one on one situation. On-call with a consultant cover, you will get experience of acute ophthalmology with the opportunity for experience of Ophthalmic Trauma being invaluable in our rural setting.
We offer a specialty wide service with surgeons with special interests in Paediatric Ophthalmology, Anterior Segment and Medical retina and Oculoplastics, as well as visiting specialists in Glaucoma and VR, and a truly general ophthalmology clinic setup. Other than Vitreo-retinal work which is referred to Auckland we provide surgical management of most eye conditions.
Our training program includes weekly teaching including journal club and teaching for registrars, audits and regular M&M meetings are held and you will be encouraged to take part in the teaching program. You will be closely supervised and supported in clinics and theatres in the acute and elective settings.
Whangarei provides secondary care services to a large rural region with many high health needs. Due to the population make up and the unselected nature of our admissions Registrars gain experience managing a wide variety of conditions including rarer conditions such as rheumatic fever, tuberculosis and meningococcal disease.
You will get the opportunity to travel to Bay of Islands and Kaitaia Hospitals for visiting clinics and theatre lists.
